What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss?
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is a process of using the patient’s own blood plasma to help aid in facial rejuvenation, healing, and even hair restoration. PRP is a safe and natural procedure that is performed in our office, with no surgery or drugs required. It has been used by plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons for more than 20 years. It has been shown to be an effective treatment option to help with patients’ recovery during rhinoplasty, face lifts and other procedures.
PRP is now being used as a potentially effective means of stimulating hair restoration and hair growth in the 56% of Americans who experience hair loss. While clinical studies have yet to prove conclusive, strong anecdotal information and data pooled from a number of small patient trials suggests that PRP has promise as a non-surgical procedure to help patients with thinning, stringy or damaged hair.
What Does PRP Do?
PRP uses the recuperative powers of the body’s own cells to aid in the recuperative and reconstructive process. Human blood contains essential clotting and tissue growth factors that can assist in tissue regeneration and healing. By separating out the platelets that contain these growth factors, and then reinjecting them back into the affected area, PRP helps stimulate new growth, with good results.
