Project Description

If you’re like most people, your skin care routine includes a mix of cleansers, moisturizers and serums that keep your complexion smooth and supple. You might even complement your daily regimen with rejuvenation treatments to erase any fine lines or wrinkles that have occurred over the years. While this will keep your face looking more youthful, the neck and chin can also show the signs of aging. Often overlooked, your neck may develop loose skin, wrinkles and bands that can make you look older despite a fresh facial appearance. Addressing these concerns may be the key you need to unlock a fully rejuvenated look and balanced contours that enhance your natural beauty.

At Ridenour Plastic Surgery, board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Brock D. Ridenour specializes in revitalizing the face, neck and chin. Using advanced surgical techniques such as the neck lift, he can eliminate the signs of aging in the neck and improve the harmony of your overall appearance. With years of experience and an exceptional eye for creating outstanding results, Dr. Ridenour has a long track record of success in helping his patients look and feel their very best. You already take good care of your face, now keep reading to learn how a neck lift can give you the comprehensive results you’ve been looking for.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, also called a lower rhytidectomy, is one of the most effective procedures for revitalizing the lower face and neck. The signs of aging often extend beyond the face and affect the jawline, chin and neck, but only a neck lift can directly address the concerns that occur here. This includes jowls, muscle bands, a double chin and the appearance of a “turkey wattle,” issues that can disrupt your facial contours and create an unbalanced look, especially if the face is youthful, but the neck is not. By manipulating the underlying tissues and eliminating excess skin, a neck lift can address these concerns and restore a more sculpted, cohesive appearance.

Can a Neck Lift be Combined with Facelift Surgery?

A neck lift is often combined with other procedures, including

, to provide the most balanced and natural-looking results. If you’ve previously received a facelift or your neck is disproportionately aged in appearance, a neck lift can also be performed on its own with superb results. The extent of your procedure and any supplemental treatments will be discussed during your consultation, and Dr. Ridenour will design a surgical plan that meets your needs. If you do opt to combine a neck lift with a facelift or any other procedures, these will be performed together to ensure a smooth recovery.

Is a Neck Lift Right for Me?

Neck lifts are suitable for both men and women who want to correct the signs of aging that appear on the lower face and neck. Used to treat a variety of concerns, a neck lift will provide noticeable improvement if you experience any of the following:

  • Loose, sagging neck skin or jowls
  • Excess fat below the chin
  • Muscle bands or lines on the neck
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stretched skin or a “turkey neck”

If you’re seeking a neck lift to improve your facial contours, you should be in good health with reasonable expectations. Those considering a facelift or other facial procedure are especially good candidates for a neck lift since these can be combined to sculpt a fully rejuvenated appearance. To ensure that a neck lift can produce your desired outcome, Dr. Ridenour will review your goals, concerns and expectations during an in-person consultation and determine if the procedure is right for you.

Your Initial Consultation

Your initial consultation is a meeting with Dr. Ridenour that lasts about 45 minutes to discuss the details of the procedure and review your medical history, aesthetic goals, needs and expectations. He will also thoroughly examine your lower face and neck to assess the amount of skin laxity, muscle separation, banding and other concerns present that contribute to an aged appearance. Photography and computer imaging are available at this stage to help you visualize your results and better understand what a neck lift can accomplish. During this time, Dr. Ridenour will listen carefully to any questions or concerns you may have to ensure that you feel confident and informed about the procedure.

Your initial consultation will also help Dr. Ridenour develop an individualized surgical plan based on your needs and determine the best approach for reaching your cosmetic goals. Near the end of your meeting, he will help you decide which type of anesthesia is best for you and recommend an appropriate surgical setting for your procedure. This may be in-office at Ridenour Plastic Surgery, at an outpatient surgical center or in a larger facility such as Barnes West County Hospital, depending on the scope of your treatment. Dr. Rideour will also provide you with patient references, information on procedure costs and other printed materials to help you make an informed decision.

The Day of Surgery

The day before your procedure, you should not eat or drink anything after midnight. When you arrive at the office, surgery center or hospital the next morning, the details of your procedure will be reviewed and you’ll be asked some precautionary health questions before proceeding. At this time, Dr. Ridenour will be available to ensure that you feel confident moving forward and that all of your questions have been answered. Next, you’ll meet with the anesthesiologist and nurses that will be taking care of you and an I.V. may be inserted depending on the appropriate level of sedation for your procedure. Dr. Ridenour will also carefully mark you with a surgical pen to guide him during your operation and ensure accurate, precise results. When it’s time to begin, you’ll be taken to a clean, sterile procedure room and placed comfortably on the operating table. Your safety is Dr. Ridenour’s number one priority, so you’ll be carefully monitored with state-of-the-art equipment that monitors your EKG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels, exhaled carbon dioxide and more throughout your surgery.

After everything is prepared, Dr. Ridenour will make a well-placed incision and begin sculpting more youthful contours in your lower face and neck. By lifting the tissues, removing excess skin and tightening the underlying muscles, Dr. Ridenour can eliminate the signs of aging and produce beautiful, natural-looking results. He can also redistribute fat beneath the chin to redefine your jawline and create a smoother appearance. If you are also receiving a facelift or other rejuvenating treatments, these will be completed at the same time as your neck lift. When finished, Dr. Ridenour will redrape the skin and close the incisions. Although the specific techniques used will vary depending on your specific concerns, the signs of aging will be eliminated in the lower face and neck so you can enjoy a youthful-looking profile for years to come.

What Happens After Surgery?

After your neck lift surgery, your neck may feel tight, sore and tender. You may also experience some swelling and bruising, but this is completely normal and can be managed with plenty of rest and over-the-counter medication. As you begin to heal, these effects will subside and the improvements in your facial contours will become more apparent. The day after your procedure, we will remove your dressings to evaluate your early progress and ensure that everything looks normal. We will also provide you and your caretaker with detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions to promote a smooth recovery.

Throughout your recovery, an important part of the process will be returning to the office for check-in appointments. This gives us the opportunity to ensure that you are healing properly and address any questions or concerns you may have. We will also provide you additional care instructions if needed and advise you on when you can begin to incorporate daily activities back into your routine. These visits occur the day after your surgery, three to four days later and then after one week for suture removal. At Ridenour Plastic Surgery, your comfort and satisfaction are important to us, so more appointments can be made as needed to ensure an optimal outcome. After your recovery, our team demonstrates an ongoing commitment to each patient and will continue to follow up to provide any necessary assistance you may need, including help with skin care or any additional services that will complement your results.
